What did you do the summer you were 12? I opened a pizzeria from my mom’s kitchen at her summer home.

My pizza business was way more successful than my mom liked. Seven weeks in my mom took me to town & encouraged me to buy some Lego. In fact, $50 worth which was a trunk load back then. On arrival back at the cottage; she gave me a statement showing I owed her $78 for supplies. I had only $55 left. My mom took the $55 and said, “Unfortunately I will need to put you into Receivership”. A valuable lesson that still impacts me. If you visit my office you will find a picture of a mailroom with the caption: “Happiness is positive cash flow”.

As an entrepreneur I launched 6 startups, bought 5 businesses and sold 4 with the last 2 bought by Jim Pattison on September 30, 2010. Since then I have been a CEO/President for hire. Over my career, I have completed 11 acquisitions in 5 countries on 3 continents and created two international joint ventures.

Quite by coincidence, my career choices led me to become a transformation specialist, recreating underperforming businesses into EBITDA growth machines. My method is always the same… I focus the organization on its competitive advantages and customers who fit while eliminating what doesn’t.

The older the organization the more difficult the transformation becomes as entitlements, unviable customers & products, and process complexities become the norm. Most often it requires a paring down to the core led by a new team who have the humility to understand that only customers decide winners.

Having an infectiously positive attitude; I often get to publicly speak about M&A, business strategy, new product development and recruiting using technology. I love sharing my wins & failures in hopes others can benefit from my experience.
